Reflection

Through these assignments, I learned a lot of knowledge about theories and principles of the field of publication and designs. I have understand the need and importance about audience, purpose and context to be better in my studies. I had learned to be responsible to what i wrote in my blog and also in other links of website. This course make me understand how important is document design to attract the audience and so give them the correct information as well as ensure they understand our presentation.

By blogging, I did learn how to design and format my blog, i edit my blog in the way to attract my audience's attention. It also make me know more about "good" design and "good" presentation or document. I believe everything i had learned in this course is going to help me in my other course and also all my assignments.

Sexism in Advertising

What do you felt when looking in this picture ?

This is a gang-bang and any woman that sees those shoes instead of that message deserves those shoes.(Alex Leo, 2008)

In advertising, it is easy to get a man's attention by using women's bodies and associate getting the woman if he buys the product. (Richard F. Taflinger, PhD, 1996) We all know the purpose of advertising is to convince people that products are of use to them in one way or another, it is clear that sex is a strong appeal to use in advertising. However, advertising cannot take advantage of a woman's instinctive sexual desire, because advertising job is not to build for the future, it is to sell a product now! (Richard F. Taflinger, PhD, 1996)

Two balls trying to drive out the meaning of thursday Ladies' night. Do you get it ?

In the article of ‘Time to kick sexism out of advertising’ (guardian.co.uk, 2010) stated football has dealt with racism on the terraces, but still ignores sexism among the players. Beatrix Campbell (2010) mentioned racism was once an ingredient of popular culture, too: racism and sexism were the vernacular of sport talks as well as she said footballers' ridiculous and indefensible earnings apparently generate a sense of masculine entitlement. Sexism may not yet be recognized for what it is, but something about masculine attitudes to morality is shifting on the terraces. (Beatrix Campbell, 2010)

Why is the Times running half page of a woman's legs lying out from a shopping bag?
Why fashion ad not a fashion ad? (womensmediacenter.com, 2008)

This is Sexism in Advertising.

In the article ‘Boys, Girls – this is not a competition. Sexist ads are bad for everyone.’ (Dabitch, 2008) clearly argued that sexism in advertising is not good for everyone. Dabitch (2008) stated there are men being portrayed as super hunks with shiny oily six-packs in advertising as well, and young boys are becoming anorexic, dependent on steroids and blowing their weekly allowance on back.

Caused people felt like watching child porn because this ads offers a young woman whose own a children face having a sexually posture taking picture. (Alex Leo, 2008)

The article of Alex Leo (2008) ‘Five Sexist Trends the Advertising World Just Can’t shake’ stated the fact that these trends are so widespread is not the fault of the advertising world and these people are paid to appeal to our kids, they are often self-aware in their tendency to make the world harder for women, that's the life they've chosen.

Cartoon Publishing, Political Discourse, Audience Perception, Ideological Differences, Regulations, Ethical Publishing: The Cartoons that Shook the World

Source: Google.com
The article ‘The Cartoons that Shook the World’ (2009) is a radio station transcript written by Jytte Klausen. According to the Yale University Press (2009), the author is Professor of Comparative Politics at Brandeis University and she is the author of The Islamic Challenge: Politics and Religion in Western Europe and War and Welfare: Europe and the United States, 1945 to the Present. This article presenting an incident happened few years ago about Muslims around the world were protesting against a dozen caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad published by a Danish newspaper.

In the Ramona Koval’s (2010) article, it confirmed Samuel Huntingdon's thesis of a clash of civilisations but researcher Jytte Klausen says it's much more complicated than that. In ‘The Cartoons that Shook the World’, it's a detailed and absorbing account of the whole affair. (Ramona Koval, 2010) In the transcript, the author Jytte Klausen been interviewed by Peter Mares. She concludes that the Muslim reaction to the cartoons was not--as was commonly assumed--a spontaneous emotional reaction arising out of the clash of Western and Islamic civilizations. (Jytte Klausen, 2009)

Source: Google.com
Newspapers in Denmark have recently reprinted the cartoons of the prophet Muhammad which caused controversy and violent protest in 2005 when they were published in Jyllands-Posten. Djehuty (2008) personally strongly against any legal limits on freedom of speech, she believe the laws which already exist to prohibit threatening behavior, incitement to violence, and so on should be enough. Djehuty (2008) feel that individuals or media which choose to say things which are offensive, provocative, or likely to increase divisions and hatred within the community are acting in a very unethical way although there should be no legal sanction.

The cartoons are on the whole cheaply funny, Islamophobic and in terrifically bad taste, though one showing Muhammad at the gates of heaven telling a string of suicide bombers “Stop, stop! We ran out of virgins!” and another showing a cartoonist fearfully drawing a picture of the prophet speak truths bigger than their offense. (Pierre Tristam, 2010)

According to Michael Karadjis (2006), in some Muslim-dominated countries the mass media often displays anti-Jewish images. Michael Karadjis (2006) concluded some Western leftists have used this fact as an argument to justify the publication of the anti-Muslim cartoons by Western papers which consider a very strange argument.

Blogging Etiquette

Nowadays, internet and blogging already happen to be a part of our life which caused the issue of blogging etiquette became a serious and sensitive issue that we concerned.  We all know that while that is an important factor for the quality and impression of any blog, the overall blog etiquette at the site which means how well the site and the voices on the site are behaved and what impression this leaves the visitors. (Mike King, 2010)

Source: malaysiakini.com

The article “Blogger held over insulting posting” written by Jassmine Shadiqe (2010) had reported about a young blogger identified as Aduka Taruna was arrested at 4pm in Kota Baru at 25 January 2010 because he posted an insulting comment without being proved on his own personal blog following the death of the late sultan of Johor. This article is related to the issue blogging etiquette and truly showed how this issue influences our life.

There was similar news that happened in other countries which also related to the issue blogging etiquette.  The article ‘Video journalist jailed for 20 years for working with exiled media (adelaidenow.com.au 6 January 2010) stated about a Myanmar court has handed down a 20-year jail term to a video journalist who worked with exiled media, rights groups said Wednesday, as the ruling junta continues its crackdown on dissent.

There is another article on 13 November 2010 titled “Palestinian Blogger Jailed for Criticisms of Islam on Facebook” by Samuel D Smith (2010) reported about a 26 year old Palestinian blogger from the West Bank town of Qalqiliya named Walid Husayin going to face life in jail because he insulted Porphet Muhammad on Facebook.
Source: google.com

These entire articles proved the importance of this issue and how serious it will be if we did not aware with it. Michael Bugeja (2007) concluded the blog ethics debate continuing and expanding but there will always be an element of thought that blogs register ethics as praxis. As a student, I rely a lot on the Internet for information and blogging and Facebook already became a part of communication in my life.  So it is very important for us to learn how to survive in blog and internet.

According to Pete Babb (2007), we shall not confuse thy opinion with gospel truth,
shall not invoke personal attacks,
MUST cite those references,
shall punctuate and capitalize.
Furthermore, we must respect the old adage.

New forms of media publishing.

The line between what constitutes blogging and journalism is blurred and so too is the line that decides the degree to which normal journalistic ethics apply to bloggers(Colin, 2004). The term of media ecosystem means the relationship between weblogs and journalism. According to John Naughton (2006), the relationship is emerging between the new medium of blogging and more conventional print journalism which is beneficial to both sides.

John Naughton (2006) concluded the new ecosystem will be richer, more diverse and immeasurably more complex because of the number of content producers, the density of the interactions between them and their products, the speed with which actors in this space can communicate with one another, and the pace of development made possible by ubiquitous networking. New media theory is an intellectual discipline that examines the nature, roles, and functioning of new media objects (that is, works) in their cultures. (Jeffrey Bardzell) the common new media types is web sites, multimedia, blogs, multimedia presentations.

According to Agathe Wiedemair (2010, the modern concept of pastoral power is of unique value, when applied to new media practices and social networking sites such as facebook. Facebook and the ability of its members to act as individuals within a collective serves this double-role as a simultaneously global yet self-involved form of virtual representation and communication. (Agathe Wiedemair, 2010)

Types of Blogging Communities & Methods to Build Blogging Communities.

This post is going to discuss the types of blogging communities and methods to build blogging communities. According to Arren (2009), blogging community as known as blogosphere is a collective community of several blogs which are online communities of several blogs connecting bloggers to other people.

To create a blog community, we have to network ourselves, know our community, retaining visitors, increasing comments, leveraging social media and have some advertisement networks. (LeMerle, R 2007)

There are several types of blogging communities which are Single Blog Community the first form of blog based community to emerge as readers begin returning to early bloggers' sites, commenting and getting to know not only the blogger, but the community of commentors. (White N, 2006) Next, Central Connecting topic Community is a community that arises between blogs linked by a common passion or topic. (White N, 2006) The last type of blogging communities is boundaries communities which are collections of blogs and blog readers hosted on a single site or platform. (White N, 2006)

I am going to discuss one structure of boundaries communities.  Example of this blogging community is MySpace.com. According to White N, (2006), often these communities have other tools such as discussion boards, social networking features, wikis and instant messaging built in. Power in boundaries communities is held in part by the ‘owner’ of the platform who can impose rules on the community, but power is exercised by bloggers in three typical ways. (White N, 2006)

Classification of Blogs & Opinion about the Most Appropriate Classification approach.

This post is going to discuss about different types of blogs. The term “blogs” is a shortened form of "web logs." (Sherry Holetzky, 2010) The current size of the blogosphere is currently uncountable, we could imagine how many blogs are created in our world. The most common way to classify a blog is using tags. According to the research, tag expansion helped to improve the recall of blog classification with the price of precision degradation. (Aixin Sun, Maggy Anastasia Suryanto and Ying Liu, 2007)

According to the research paper (Teh Phoey Lee Phoebe, 2007), blogs can be categorized by media, device, genre and legal status of publisher. Based on category by media, a blog that contains video clips is called a video blog, or vlog. For example, youtube.com. Blogs with shorter posts and mixed media types are called tumblelogs. The ones comprising links are called a linklog, which is crazyting4ever.blogspot.com. A site containing a portfolio of sketches is called a sketchblog, while one comprising photos is called a photolog. (Teh Phoey Lee Phoebe, 2007)

According to Teh Phoey Lee Phoebe(2007), category by device, a blog written through a mobile device, such as a mobile phone or PDA, is called a moblog. Some blogs focus on a particular subject, such as political blogs, travel blogs, fashion blogs, project blogs, or legal blogs. While not a legitimate type of blog, one used for the sole purpose of spamming is known as a Splog. (Teh Phoey Lee Phoebe, 2007)

In my opinion, there are many blogs are combinations of styles. The blog will be much more attractive this way, it clarify the main message that the writer want to send to the audience more clearly and in different ways as in videos, audios, pictures and words.

Blogs as current Phenomenon & Benefits of Blogging to the Community

According to the 2009 State of the Blogosphere survey demonstrates, the growth of the blogosphere's influence on subjects ranging from business to politics to the way information travels through communities continues to flourish. (Jennifer McLean, 2009) It reported that the size of blogosphere is growing in a speedy rate. It is very difficult to figure out what is the size of the current blogosphere. According to Lee Hopkins (2009), in Technorati’s own “About us” page that the number of blogs they were following was about 200 million. We can only figure out the current size of blogosphere by ourselves.

There is a research that makes a comparative, data-based study of the conceptual metaphors in the English and Malay bloggers’ discourse on social-political issues in Malaysia. They concluded that there are differences in the metaphors of used in the Chinese blogs as opposed to the Malay blogs but there is no proof or argues that the use of the metaphors in the blogs is conscious.

According to the book "Blogging and Democratization in Malaysia: Anew Civil Society in the Making", the government of Malaysia clamped down on bloggers in the period before the 2008 elections and recount examples of bloggers rapidly mobilizing support in response to police action. The importance of the comments in blogs was highlighted when a blogger was arrested because of a comment left in his blog; in a countermove, a police report was filed against the Prime Minister because of objectionable content in comments on his website. (J. Tan & I. Zawawi,2009)

In my opinion, the benefits of those prevalent blogs to the community is to knowledge those people that are not concern with the sensitive issue that will cause the blogs prevalent in Malaysia. It is not really benefits if I look into form a point of view of Malaysian. We are always illegal to touch any sensitive issues because the government needs to maintain a peaceful life between different races, cultures and religions in Malaysia.
